Jiayu Gao, a researcher and critical practitioner based in Hong Kong, specializing in 3D worldbuilding and interactive design. Beyond the digital sphere, she excels as an event and space curator, working for activity planning and social media content creation. Jiayu graduated from MA Fashion Media and Communication and BA Critical Practice in Fashion Media at London College of Fashion (UAL), and currently a researcher at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has experiences in graphic design, UI/UX design, 3D practices within and beyond fashion industry. She believes in the power of storytelling to connect people and drive changes.
Jiayu Gao’s practice sits at the intersection of 3D worldbuilding, interactive design, and critical research into technology’s cultural life. Working across Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, and generative AI tools, she builds speculative environments from AI-driven auction museums to immersive spatial narratives, which interrogate algorithmic authorship, curatorial authority, and collective memory. Her practice moves fluidly between digital and physical space, extending into event curation, activity design, and content strategy. Rooted in fashion media and critical theory, her work treats storytelling as infrastructure: a way of building worlds that reconnect people and provoke change, whether staged as installation, livestream, or lived event.
