Artist Statement
Elif Gamze DEDELER is a research assistant at CUHK's AI for the Future Project, as well as a researcher at CRCA (Centre for Robotics in Construction and Architecture). She is a PhD student in the Individualized Interdisciplinary Program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where she conducts research at the intersection of art, machine creativity, and AI algorithms. She holds a B.Arch. and MBA from Bilkent University, alongside an M.Sc. in Architectural Design Computing from İstanbul Technical University. Her research centers on AI, evolutionary algorithms, diffusion models, robotics, sensors and human-machine interaction in architecture. She teaches computational design, creative coding, and robotics workshops.
Her practice sits at the intersection of computation, embodiment, and design research, working across generative systems, robotics, and AI-driven workflows to investigate how intelligence, whether human, mechanical, or artificial, takes physical and visual form. Collaboration between human and computer is treated as a generative act in itself, one in which the interaction reveals patterns of thought.
Work Statement
This body of work consists of a series of eight interconnected digital sketches, realized as high-quality prints on paper. Each individual piece is presented within a uniform 30x30 cm frame, arranged in a structured 4x2 grid formation of four columns and two rows with 5 cm spacing in between.
The piece is collaborated and conceptualized with AI assistance from Stable Diffision open source model version XL.
No two hands think alike. Each sketch in this series traces a hand shaped not by anatomy alone, but by years of specific use, the grip of a tool, the pressure of a habit, the muscle memory of a gesture repeated until it became form. These proportions are not deviations from a "normal" hand; they are evidence. The knuckle worn a certain way, the finger curved just so, each is a residue left behind by a mind that has been thinking, for years, through this particular body.
This series resists the idea of a "correct" hand. Each drawing insists instead that the mind-body relationship cannot be standardized: it is irregular, singular, and irreplaceable in every instance. To render a hand faithfully is not to copy anatomy, but to make visible the quiet, ongoing negotiation between thinking and being.
irregular, singular, irreplaceable was presented in Mind × Body: Catalyst Phenomenon Archive, organised by the Reality Intelligence Association as part of London Design Festival 2026.
