Portrait of Ru Jia

Ru Jia is an MFA candidate in Public Art at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, where she also earned her BFA with distinction. Specializing in public art, spatial design, and urban renewal, she has contributed to impactful projects across Beijing, including cultural park designs, large-scale murals, and subway installations. Her professional experience includes exhibition design roles at the National Museum of China and Xinjiang Art Museum. Honored with Beijing's Outstanding Graduation Thesis and Design awards, she excels in merging artistic creation, spatial planning, and visual communication.

My artistic and spatial practice focuses on multi-sensory synesthesia, urban public space conceptual design, and emotional resonance. I explore how invisible human senses—such as olfactory memory and seasonal perceptions—can be translated into tangible spatial languages and interactive environments. By bridging spatial narratives with micro-perceptions of daily life, my practice reinterprets industrial heritage sites like Beijing 798 into dynamic sanctuaries for urban youth, fostering public engagement, emotional healing, and narrative art experiences within contemporary spatial contexts.

Work Statement

Bread&Proust Effect — Bread Olfactory Experience Space deconstructs seasonal memories through bread's olfactory perception. Conceived for Beijing 798, this virtual architectural concept uses digital montage collages, 3D spatial rendering, and olfactory zoning algorithms (Dimensions: Variable/Concept Space). The project translates seasonal aromas—spring nuts, summer fruits, autumn bran, and winter butter—into immersive, multi-sensory interior zones. Requiring 3D modeling, VR rendering, and scent-diffusing ambient technology, it converts private olfactory memories into a collective dynamic narrative offering sensory healing for young creators.

Bread & Proust effect was presented in Mind × Body: Catalyst Phenomenon Archive, organised by the Reality Intelligence Association as part of London Design Festival 2026.
